CMIS-115 Introduction to Computer
Information Systems
Text: Discovering Computers 2006: Concepts for a
Connected World Shelly Cashman Vermaat
New Perspectives Microsoft Office 2003 Second Edition, First Course
Use
of the Textbook in CMIS-115:As
a valuable tool, the textbook represents an important resource to the student. It
is the responsibility of the student to read assigned materials and chapters to
be incorporated into class discussions.
Course
Description: This course
involves the fundamental concepts and applications of computers; the impact of
the computer on human events and social institutions; the control, predictions,
and implications of future computer developments.
Student
Outcomes: Upon
Successful completion of the class, the student will be able understand and
identify:
ü
The
history and evolution of the computer and its effects on society
ü
Major
components of computer hardware and data processing equipment including input
and output devices, peripheral equipment, storage and communications equipment
ü
Use
and application of major applications software (Word, Excel, Access, and
PowerPoint)
ü
Organizational
structure and the role that Information Systems plays in the organization
ü
Security
and Ethics and how it effects the computers, information systems, and business
ü
The
future role of computers and information systems.
Special
Accommodations: Accommodations
must be officially documented with the college and approved before they are put
in place. Any students who require specific accommodations must contact me
during the first week of class so I may arrange to appropriately meet your
needs.
Attendance: A student is responsible for completion
of all projects and tests.
ü
If a
student misses a class he or she is responsible to make up the missed lecture
and lab time on their own time.
ü
If a
student misses a written test, he or she must contact me within 48 hours in
order to make arrangements for a makeup. Failure to contact me within the
allowed timeframe will result in a 0 for the specific test. An makeup test may
be arranged but will receive no better grade than a B.
ü
Students
whose absence level exceeds 20% of classes met, will be considered "not in
regular attendance."
ü
Students
seeking financial aid signatures are required to have all projects and
homework completed in full prior to attendance verification. Students must meet
with me during my regularly scheduled offices hours for signatures.
Withdrawal
Policy: After the
regular drop/add period students will have the opportunity to withdraw no later
than the date specified below. Students will be given a withdrawal either
passing or failing based on the current grade and completion of assignments.
Withdrawal must be initiated by the student.
Last day to drop this class is
04/01/2006
Late Assignments: Late
assignments will not be accepted. Projects are due no later than the beginning of class on the
scheduled date. All projects must be submitted to Blackboard in order to be
accepted.
Plagiarism/Cheating:
Plagiarism is defined in the student catalog and considered a very
serious matter. Evidence of this academic indiscretion will be considered
grounds for removal from this class with a failing grade. All work MUST be
created as a result of work in this class. Old work and projects may not be
recycled from previous classes. Sharing files, at any level, is also considered
unacceptable and treated accordingly.
Evidence of this will result, at a minimum, in the loss of all points
for entire project in question.
Electronic
Devices: The use of
cellular telephones and paging devices during the class is not acceptable and
should be turned off if brought to class. I also request that you do not use
any type of recording device during the class sessions. You may be asked to
leave the class for failing to comply with these simple requests.
Quizzes:
Timed quizzes (5 minutes) will be
administered at the beginning of class. No make ups will be allowed. Nine (9)
quizzes will be administered but only 8 will be scored (80 points) so there
will be no penalty for missing one quiz. If all nine quizzes are taken you have
the possibility of adding ten (10) extra points to your overall grade.
Students should purchase a
storage device such as High Density Diskettes or a

ü All projects will be accepted only by submitting them on-line by using the Drop-Box in Blackboard.
ü All applications tests (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint) may be taken an unlimited number of times assuming the test was taken on or prior to the scheduled test date. If you miss the scheduled test date you will be allowed a total of 3 attempts for that specific test.
